The controversial Italian doctor Luigi Di Bella faces a formal complaint under Italy’s medical ethics code after a judge ordered a hospital to provide his controversial cancer treatment to an infant with brain cancer.
Ninety-year-old Dr. Di Bella claims he has successfully treated more than 10,000 cancer patients over the past 20 years with a mixture of vitamins, hormones and drugs, but a 1998 study found the treatment to be ineffective.
On Friday, a judge ordered the Santobono hospital in Naples to give a 16-month-old boy with a brain tumor Dr. Di Bella’s expensive combination of somatostatin, melatonin, bromocriptine, beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin D, ascorbic acid, retinoic acid and cyclophosphamide.
