Germline Mutations May Contribute to ‘sporadic’ Renal Cell Carcinoma


NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 02 –

Members of the nuclear and extended family of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have an increased risk of developing the disease, according to a report in the August 1st issue of the International Journal of Cancer. Germline mutations therefore appear to be significantly involved in the development of RCC classified as sporadic.

“The etiology of RCC is incompletely understood and the inherited genetic contribution uncertain,” Dr. T mas Gudbjartsson, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, and colleagues say. “Although there are rare mendelian forms of RCC stemming from inherited mutations, most cases are thought to be sporadic.”
