– Amgen Inc. said on Monday that US regulators had approved its Aranesp drug–a longer-lasting form of the company’s older anemia drug Epogen–to treat anemia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, California, sells Epogen as a treatment for anemia in kidney dialysis patients, but rights to the drug for other indications were licensed early on to Johnson & Johnson, which sells the same drug in the US under the brand name Procrit for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
