NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 25 Adding positron emission tomography (PET) scanning to conventional preoperative workup would reduce the rate of futile operations by about 20%, according to a randomized, controlled trial reported in the April 20 issue of The Lancet.
"Despite current diagnostic workup, early local and distant relapses are frequent, and surgery is done for preoperatively suspicious lesions that can prove to be benign," write Harm van Tinteren, MSc, and colleagues from the PLUS (PET in Lung cancer Staging) study group. "Surgery can be futile in up to 50% of patients with presumably resectable non-small cell lung cancer."
