NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 15 – When breast cancer is diagnosed more than 20 weeks after initial visualization on a screening mammogram, the risk of lymph node metastases and a larger tumor size is significantly increased, according to a report published in the April 15th issue of Cancer.
The authors point out that recent findings suggest that delays in diagnosis may increase rates of recurrence and death in women with symptomatic breast cancer. However, it was unclear what effect such delays may have in women with screen-detected, and therefore, asymptomatic, breast cancer.
