High Soy Protein Intake Provides Only Modest Cholesterol-Lowering Benefit In Moderate Hypercholesterolaemia

Regular dietary intake of high levels of soy protein provides only a modest cholesterol-lowering benefit for patients with moderate hypercholesterolaemia.

Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, and colleagues at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, assessed the effects of soy protein and soy-derived isoflavones on blood lipid levels.

The researchers studied 42 subjects with LDL cholesterol levels at least 3.36 mmol/L. Each subject received four diets in randomized order for six weeks per phase. The diets contained a minimum of 25 gm of animal protein, or isolated soy protein, with each containing either trace amounts or 50 mg of isoflavones.
