Smoking During Pregnancy Linked to Obesity in Offspring

Smoking during pregnancy appears to double a woman’s risk of having children who become obese, according to a recent report.

“Women at risk of becoming pregnant should stop smoking not only to reduce the well established risks of perinatal morbidity, sudden infant death syndrome, and childhood asthma but also…to reduce the risk for obesity,” lead author Dr. Rudiger von Kries, from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany, told Reuters Health.

The current findings are based on an analysis of 1999-2000 data from 6483 children whose parents–mother, father or both–completed school entry health questionnaires in six German communities.
