Men and women can improve their lipid profile with only minimal weight reduction by increasing the amount they exercise, according to the results of a randomized trial appearing in the November 7th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. William E. Kraus from Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues randomly assigned sedentary, overweight or mildly obese men and women with mild-to-moderate dyslipidemia to one of three exercise groups or a control group.
One group engaged in high-amount high-energy exercise, which had the caloric equivalent of jogging 20 miles per week at 65% to 80% of peak oxygen consumption.
