Coronary Artery Disease Risk Among Asians Cut By Adopting Indo-Mediterranean Diet

Adoption of a diet rich in alpha-linolenic acid could help reduce cardiovascular disease in Asian populations, especially among Asian people living in Western countries.

Pronounced benefits are shown in a two year study by Israeli and Indian clinicians of an Indo-Mediterranean diet among 1,000 patients with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, or surrogate risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). There was a marked decline in CAD morbidity and mortality.

Because CAD is a major public-health problem for south Asian people, and is not explained by conventional risk factors, such as hypertension or increased cholesterol concentrations, Dr Elliot Berry, Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel, and Dr RB Singh, Center of Nutrition and Heart, Moradabad, India, carried out a randomized, single-blind trial.
