A mutation in the hepatic lipase gene, known as -514(C/T), that has been linked to increased HDL-cholesterol (C) levels does not always have this effect; it is modified by dietary fat intake.
Dr. Jose M. Ordovas, from Tufts University in Boston, and colleagues studied the interaction between -514(C/T) and dietary fat intake in 2130 subjects who participated in the Framingham Offspring Study. The findings are published in the October 22nd rapid access issue of Circulation.
Subjects with at least one copy of the mutated gene had significantly higher HDL-C levels than those with no copies of the mutated gene. However, this only held true for subjects whose fat intake constituted 30% or less of their total calories.
