Compared with interferon therapy alone, the addition of Chinese herbal medicine appears to improve the treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, according to the results of a meta-analysis.
Dr. John M. Colford, Jr., commented to Reuters Health: “Chinese practice has, for thousands of years, built an empiric base of treatment experience. Randomized trials of Chinese herbal medicine have only recently become accessible to the wider scientific community.”
Dr. Colford, from the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health, and colleagues analyzed 27 studies identified through searches of TCMLARS (Traditional Chinese Medicine Literature Analysis and Retrieval Service) and other databases, according to their report in the October issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
