Low Vitamin D Levels Not Restricted To High-risk Groups

Vitamin D insufficiency is far more common than is generally assumed and is not necessarily restricted to high-risk groups such as the elderly, according to findings from two separate studies presented here at the 24th annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

In one study, researchers under lead author J.L Sackrison, Research and Development, DiaSorin Inc, Stillwater, MN and multi-centre colleagues, assessed serum 25 OH vitamin D (25 OH D) status among a sample of 126 apparently healthy volunteers recruited from a European urban centre.

“For the purposes of this study, vitamin D insufficiency was defined as a serum 25 OH D concentration of <15 n/ml,” the authors indicated. Out of this sample, 34 percent had serum 25 OH D concentrations of less than 15 ng/ml, while the mean total 25 OH D concentration was 19.4 ng/ml. Among patients whose 25 OH D concentrations were considered sufficient, the mean concentration was 23.6 ng/ml, while among those whose 25 OH D levels were considered insufficient, the mean concentration was only 12.1 ng/ml.
