Oral Contraceptive Use Helps Prevent Goitre Development

Clinical Endocrinology

Thyroid volume is lower in women taking oral contraceptives as is a lower risk of developing goitre. Clinically evident goitre is four times more frequent in non- users.

This finding is contrary to a belief that an aetiological factor, increasing the risk for goitre development, may be oestrogens, since the thyroid disorder is primarily encountered in women.
