WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) May 01 – The percentage of US children hospitalized for obesity-related diseases has risen sharply over the last 20 years, a trend that is likely to compound the current obesity epidemic, according to a study released Wednesday.
The percentage of US hospital discharges related directly to obesity in 6-17 year-olds nearly tripled between 1979-1981 and 1997-1999, according to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Discharges for obesity-related diabetes, gall bladder disease and sleep apnea also rose sharply.
