Nutritional intervention may improve intestinal and immune function in children with HIV infection, especially if provided before terminal stage of the disease, say Italian researchers.
A significant increase in CD4 cell count, xylose levels and body weight was seen in children with HIV infection who received enteral nutrition (EN). A similar pattern was seen in children who received total parenteral nutrition (TPN), though changes were not significant, report investigators at University Federico II, and the University of Padua, Naples, the University of Milan, and Hospital Bambino Gesù, Rome, Italy.
