NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 09 – High levels of leptin and of C-peptide may be mechanistic links between obesity and increased risk for breast cancer, according to findings presented at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in San Francisco.
Dr. Margot P. Cleary, of The Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota in Austin, and associates have for the first time identified a leptin receptor in both normal and malignant breast epithelial cells. When cultured in the presence of leptin, normal breast cells increased in number by more than 50% after 10 days, while the increase in malignant cells was nearly triple that amount.
