Occurrence of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) is an uncommon event, even after prolonged febrile seizures, investigators in Finland have found. This finding confirms the good clinical outcome of febrile seizures, report Dr R Tarkka and colleagues from the University of Oulu.
To determine if these seizures cause MTS, the research team evaluated MTS occurrence in 64 patients selected from among 329 seizure patients followed up prospectively. Twenty four had a prolonged first febrile seizure, 8 had an unprovoked one after the first febrile seizure and 32 had a single simple febrile seizure with no later unprovoked event. These latter 32 patients were matched for age-, sex- and handedness and served as controls.
