Catheters impregnated with two antibiotics were able to reduce incidence of infection complications in critically ill patients, according to findings reported here January 31st at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s 32nd Critical Care Congress.
Patients on parenteral nutrition and those given lipid emulsions appeared to respond best to the preventive measure, said Sergio Ruiz-Santana, MD, from the intensive care unit at Hospital Negrín, in Las Palmas, Spain.
The trial tested catheters laced with minocycline and rifampin against placebo catheters in 460 intensive care unit patients. Of 284 evaluable patients, cultures were negative in 62%. No difference appeared in length of stay or 30-day survival rate.
