Resistance to anti-malarial drugs pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine has risen so high that the drugs can no longer be relied on as routine therapies for travellers.
“Record numbers” of imported malaria cases are being reported in North America and Europe, say researchers at Toronto General Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada. New strategies to monitor for drug resistance are needed, they declared.
While travellers might represent “an important sentinel population” to monitor for drug-resistant malaria, traditional ways of detecting resistance, such as in vivo treatment trials and in vitro drug susceptibility testing were ill-suited to large-scale surveillance of travellers. They took too long and were too labour-intensive, the researchers contended.
