There is now clear evidence that tamoxifen reduces the risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, a major review finds. The review updates data from a number of trials, including five randomised prevention trials comparing tamoxifen or raloxifene with placebo. Four trials compared 20 mg tamoxifen with placebo daily for at least five years.
The researchers, from Cancer Research UK, Royal Marsden Hospital/Institute of Cancer Research, London, England, European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy, and the Australia New Zealand Trials Group, Newcastle, Australia, also reviewed adjuvant trials in which tamoxifen was given for at least three years, and the Multiple Outcomes Raloxifene Evaluation (MORE) trial which compared two doses of raloxifene (60 mg or 120 mg daily) with placebo for four years.
