The protective effect of oral contraceptive (OC) use against ovarian cancer is consistent across demographic strata and persists long after discontinuation, according to a report in the November issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
“Several epidemiologic studies have reported a protective effect of OCs on ovarian cancer,” Dr. Christine Bosetti, of Istituto di Richerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri,” Milan, Italy, and colleagues note. “However, there remain some open issues, including better quantification of time-related factors such as time since last use, age at first use, and time since first use.”
