In a case-control study of married couples in Hong Kong, infertile couples had significantly higher blood mercury levels than their fertile counterparts, according to a recent report. Mercury levels were directly related to the amount of seafood consumed.
Dr. Christine M. Y. Choy, from the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, and colleagues measured serum mercury levels in 157 infertile couples and in 26 fertile couples without known occupational exposure to mercury. A questionnaire was administered to all subjects to determine the quantity of seafood consumption.
