Sweden needs up-to-date, national guidelines for discharge of new mothers and their babies from the maternity ward to ensure early problems are identified, Swedish researchers recommended on Friday.
Between 1973 and 2000, the average time spent in the maternity ward in Sweden has decreased by approximately one third. In 2000 close to 50% of new mothers left the hospital within two days.
