Results of a large prospective study suggest that pregnant women who engage in vigorous leisure activity during the first and second trimester may be at reduced risk for preterm delivery.
Dr. Kelly R. Evenson of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and colleagues looked at the association between vigorous leisure activity and birth outcomes in 1699 women with a singleton pregnancy. They conducted telephone interviews with the women to determine their level of physical activity in the 3 months preceding pregnancy and during the first and second trimesters.
