AMD3100, a specific antagonist for the chemokine receptor CXCR4, may be of benefit in the treatment of ovarian cancer, researchers suggest in the October 15th issue of Cancer Research.
In previous studies, Dr. Frances R. Balkwill, from Bart’s and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, and colleagues found that CXCR4 was the only one of 14 chemokine receptors expressed on ovarian cancers. In addition, they observed the presence of the receptor’s ligand, CXCL12, in ascitic fluid from ovarian cancer patients.
