Celecoxib is as effective but significantly safer than indomethacin for the treatment of preterm labor, according to the results of a short trial reported in the September issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“Although the mechanisms that initiate either preterm or term uterine contractions are not entirely understood, the pivotal role of prostaglandins in parturition is established,” write Catherine S. Sitka, MD, and colleagues from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. “The first committed enzymatic step in prostaglandin production involves cyclo-oxygenase (COX).”
