Severe Pregnancy Complications Can Worsen Postpartum Depression Symptoms

Severe pregnancy complications may increase the severity of postpartum depression symptoms

. Hélène Verdoux, MD, and colleagues at University Victor Segalen in Bordeaux, France, prospectively studied 441 pregnant women attending the State Maternity Hospital in Bordeau.

The women were interviewed during their third trimester and at three days and six weeks postpartum. During the interviews, the researchers collected data on a large range of pregnancy, delivery and neonatal somatic adverse events. The investigators rated the data on obstetrical complications using the McNeil-Sjostrom scale for obstetrical complications and assessed maternal depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.
