Healthy Infants Born to Young Adolescent Mothers at Increased Risk For Death

Full term, healthy infants born to mothers 15 years of age or younger are more likely to die during the first year of life than those born to older mothers, according to a report published in the September issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Previous reports have shown an increased risk of death for infants born to young adolescent mothers. However, much of this excess risk may stem from the fact that such mothers have higher rates of premature delivery and low birth weight infants. Therefore, it was unclear if the risk would still be present if only mothers who gave birth to full-term, normal weight infants were included in the analysis.
