ATLANTA (Reuters Health) May 01 – High-resolution ultrasound may reduce the number of breast biopsies by as much as 28% when used to distinguish between benign and malignant solid masses, according to the results of a new study presented here at the American Roentgen Ray Society's 102nd annual meeting.
Dr. Karen Hunt, of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and colleagues evaluated 157 solid masses in 141 women. Of these lesions, 59 abnormal masses were identified by mammogram or magnetic resonance imaging, and 98 masses were palpable. Mean tumor size was 17 mm (range 5 to 80 mm).
