Endogenous Hormones Might Lower Atherosclerosis Risk in Some Older Women

Testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin could do much to reduce atherosclerotic risk in postmenopausal women not on hormone replacement therapy.

This reduction could be the result of higher total testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin being inversely related to carotid atherosclerosis in such women.

Researchers at four leading US institutions – Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, Wisconsin School of Medicine, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – conducted a case-control study in 1987-1992 which compared endogenous postmenopausal hormone levels in women in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort with and without significant carotid atherosclerosis.
