In the February 3rd advance online edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers have recommended that ephedra should be banned or restricted, based on an analysis of reports to the American Association of Poison Control Centres, which showed that it is far more likely to cause adverse effects than other herbal products.
Products with ephedra accounted for 64% of the herbal-related adverse reactions reported in 2001, which the researchers found remarkable considering less than 1% of herbal products sold that year contained ephedra.
