Obesity and type 2 diabetes are typically thought of as risk factors for arterial disease, but new study findings indicate that they may also be risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE).
Dr. Albert W. Tsai, from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and colleagues found that adults with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40 were nearly three times more likely to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) than adults with a BMI of less than 25. The
researchers’ study involved 19,293 adults who were followed for a median of 7.8 years.
