Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Relieves Nocturnal Heartburn

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) decreases the frequency of nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux by almost half when patients also have obstructive sleep apnea, physicians report in the Archives of Internal Medicine for January 13th.

Dr. Bryan T. Green, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues prospectively evaluated data from 331 patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea between 1993 and 2000. Before initiating treatment with CPAP, 62% reported at least occasional symptoms of nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux.
