Urinary Marker Reflects Severity in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Urinary N-methylhistamine (UMH), a stable metabolite of the mast cell mediator histamine, may be a useful marker of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) severity for both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to a report in the December issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

“Mast cells are thought to participate in the pathogenesis of IBD,” write S. Winterkamp, MD, and colleagues from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.
