Normal intestinal microflora is essential for normal postnatal development of the mesenchymal capillary network in the intestinal villi, researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine found when studying mice.
“By knowing how the microvasculature develops normally, we hope someday to be able to manipulate this process in patients who have problems vascularizing the gut following ischemic insult or injury,” lead author Dr. Thaddeus S. Stappenbeck told Reuters Health. He added that this research may lead to greater understanding of, and treatment for, the angiogenesis exhibited by neoplasms in the intestine.
