Segmental colonic resection appears to be as effective a treatment as subtotal colectomy for slow transit constipation (STC), with less associated morbidity, according to a report published in the October issue of the British Journal of Surgery. Subtotal colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis is the standard operative procedure for selected patients with STC.
However, the procedure is often associated with postoperative diarrhea and fecal
incontinence. Because STC often involves certain colonic segments and not the entire colon, surgeons have suggested that removing just the affected segments might be as effective as a subtotal colectomy, but produce fewer side effects.
