The effectiveness of pegylated interferon (PEG IFN) alpha-2a, with and without ribavirin, in treating patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) appears to be due to its ability to induce and maintain significant HCV-specific CD4+ T-helper 1 responses, German researchers report.
Dr. Sanaa Kamal and colleagues from the University of Freiburg examined the mechanism by which PEG IFN alpha-2a improves the sustained virologic response in patients with chronic HCV compared with standard IFN alpha-2a therapy.
