In patients with a history of esophageal variceal bleeding, endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) is a more effective method of preventing rebleeding than treatment with nadolol and isosorbide-5- mononitrate (N+I), according to a report published in the September issue of Gastroenterology.
The current findings run contrary to those of a recent study that suggested just the opposite was true. However, the rebleeding rate in the EVL group was significantly higher than in previous reports, Dr. Gin-Ho Lo, from Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, and colleagues, point out.
