Alarm symptoms reported by patients with dyspepsia have a bad prognosis. These patients have a higher mortality and more gastrointestinal cancers than dyspepsia patients without alarm symptoms, say researchers at Aarhus University, Denmark.
But most patients who developed cancer or ulcer did not initially present with any of the alarm symptoms — anaemia, black stools, blood in stools, dysphagia, jaundice and weight loss.
Noting that a tenth of patients who consult general practitioners because of dyspepsia report one or more alarm symptoms, the researchers observed their consequences prospectively over three years.
