— Treating acid reflux with a proton pump inhibitor such as lansoprazole may also have a significant impact on asthma symptoms and on the patient’s quality of life, according to a new study.
Acid reflux and nocturnal reflux are often associated with worsening of asthma symptoms and the frequency of asthma attacks, said researchers. This is usually thought to stem from gastric acids making their way up the esophagus and into the bronchial area while the patient is sleeping or lying down.
In a poster presented at the 12th annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society, Dr. Michael Littner of the department of medicine in the Veteran’s Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System studied the results of 207 patients with stable asthma who were randomized to lansoprazole (Prevacid) or placebo in addition to their usual asthma treatment.
