Endoscopic Gastroplication Appears Less Effective Than Laparoscopic Fundoplication

Seventy-eight percent of gastroesophageal reflux disease patients who undergo endoscopic gastroplication are satisfied with the results.

This is in contrast to a satisfaction rate of 96 percent seen with laparoscopic fundoplication, according to investigators.

 The investigators, from the Division of General Surgery and Gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, United States, studied 27 patients who underwent endoscopic gastroplication with the Bard Interventional Endoscopic Suturing System.

 Upper endoscopy, esophageal manometry, 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring and symptom severity questionnaires were used to evaluate the patients.
