Most primary care patients with upper gastrointestinal acid-related symptoms experience prompt symptomatic relief from therapy with the proton pump inhibitor pantoprazole.
A total of 726 Canadian physicians – almost two thirds of them family doctors – took part in this study aimed at assess the range of upper gastrointestinal acid-related symptoms in clinical
practice and how quickly patients responded to 40mg pantoprazole over seven days.
Complete data was obtained from 2,273 patients out of 3,261. Most patients had reflux esophagitis (about two thirds). The other diagnoses included peptic ulcer, upper gastrointestinal disorders, and reflux esophagitis with another diagnosis. In fact, the doctor’s initial diagnosis was not predictive of the outcome.
About one third of the patients were male. Alarm features were seen in just under a third of patients. Gastrointestinal blood loss was rarely seen – it occurred in less than one in 100 patients.
