Results from a recent review article indicate that using antibiotics for the treatment of Escherichia coli O157:H7 enteritis does not increase the risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
HUS often occurs after a prodrome of acute enteritis, usually caused by Shiga toxin-producing strains of E. coli. Results from a recent small study suggest that the risk of HUS may be increased with antibiotic use, while other, larger studies have found no association between antibiotic therapy for enterotoxic E. coli and HUS risk.
