Delay of more than 12 hours, shock at presentation, and associated injuries are not contraindications to primary anastomosis of intraperitoneal penetrating colonic injuries, a South African surgical team has demonstrated.
But patients with extraperitoneal rectal injuries should always undergo colostomy, “because it is technically difficult to repair these injuries primarily,” Dr. M.C.M. Modiba, Head of the Department of General Surgery at the Medical University of Southern Africa, in Pretoria, told Reuters Health.
