Over a third of children suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease endure severe symptoms. However, none showed Barrett’s oesophagus suggesting that reflux duration might be a major risk factor for Barrett’s oesophagus.
Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, enrolled 208 girls and 194 boys suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The children were normal on neurological examination and did not show any evidence of congenital oesophageal defects. The children’s mean age was 9.7 years. However, ages ranged from 1.5 to 25 years. Most children – 64.7 per cent – were white, while 11.7 and 7.7 per cent were Hispanic and black respectively.
