After adjustment, adult height in patients with early onset Crohn’s disease does not appear to be significantly different from that in patients with late onset of disease, Dutch investigators report.
However, corticosteroid use during puberty does lead to a reduction in final height. “Growth impairment during childhood and adolescence is a common problem faced by patients with an early onset of Crohn’s disease,” Dr. R. A. van Hogezand, of University Medical Center, in Leiden, the Netherlands, and colleagues note in the July issue of Gut.
The team obtained information on height, parental height, and disease history from 135 adult patients with Crohn’s disease. Patients who were diagnosed with Crohn’s disease before puberty were shorter than patients who had adult-onset disease (p<0.01). After adjustment for parental height, however, this difference was no longer statistically significant.
