NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 16 –
Symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is common in patients with a breathing sleep disorder, according to a report in the June issue of Chest
Dr. Stephen G. Spiro and colleagues from the University College London Hospitals, UK, prospectively examined the prevalence of symptomatic GER in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) compared with simple snorers.
In addition, they sought to identify potential risk factors for GER in these patients. Of 228 respondents to a validated questionnaire, 160 reported GER-related symptoms. Heartburn and/or acid regurgitation were the leading symptoms, according to the researchers.
