Supplementing preterm bovine milk formula with an oligosaccharide mixture similar to that found in human milk stimulates the growth of intestinal bifidobacteria in preterm infants, according to researchers.
Dr. G. Boehm, of Numico Research Germany, Friedrichsdorf, and colleagues examined the effect of a preterm formula supplement consisting of 90% galacto-oligosaccharides and 10% fructo-oligosaccharides, on the fecal flora and stool characteristics of preterm infants. Fifteen infants were given the mixture, and were compared with 15 infants given formula only and 12 infants who received fortified mother’s milk and acted as a reference group.
