Colonic mucosal biopsy and ileoscopy in patients undergoing colonoscopy for diarrhoea increases the finding of pathology by five percent.
Australian researchers reviewed 1131 colonoscopies performed for diarrhoea in a tertiary referral centre with an open-access service. The mucosal examination was normal in 465; of these, 362 had colonic biopsies.
The histology was normal in 87 percent and was non-specific in 8 percent.
Significant histopathology was present in 18 cases (five percent) with a significantly higher prevalence of microscopic colitis in patients above 60 years old, say researchers at the Department of Gastroenterology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Nedlands, Western Australia, Australia.
