SAN FRANCISCO, CA — May 24, 2002 —
An expandable hydrogel prostheses implanted into the submucosa of the esophagus augmenting the lower esophageal sphincter can significantly reduce gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the need for medication.
The Gatekeeper Reflect Repair System (Medtronics Inc.), allowed for the discontinuation of GERD medications in 12 of 14 patients at one month, show early results of a European multicenter trial. The findings were presented at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) by Dr. Paul Fockens, director of endoscopy, University of Amsterdam Academic Medical Center.
Included in the study were patients with documented typical symptoms of GERD (heartburn and/or regurgitation), acid secretion (24h pH 4.0 >4 percent total time) and responsiveness to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy.
Major exclusion criteria were poor motility, grade 3 or 4 esophagitis, Barrett esophagus and hiatal hernia greater than 3 cm. Patients underwent manometry, endoscopy, 24-hour pH-metry and symptom scoring before and after the procedure.
